7/28/2023 0 Comments My cat has been hiding all day![]() I would love some lap cats who love belly rubs and being on my shoulder, but we have to love our cats on their terms! Its so exciting when cats want to say hi or get pats from us, but play it cool, they hate desperation or visible excitement!Īlot of the time my cats are most comfortable in the same room as me, and at night I have come to expect 2 cats on my back and legs at night. I also found my cats warmed up to me quicker when i didnt force my presence on them, or ignored them until they wanted my attention/approached me. Then when they are comfortable in the room you can open the door for them to explore the rest of the house, and they can go back to their room when they feel scared or overwhelmed Very normal! Sometimes cats will feel more comfortable in a smaller room to begin with, and can explore that room comfortably first. Rescuing a cat, especially one with behavioral issues, can be hard, but the rewarding feeling and love that you get after that sweet baby warms up to you- nothing beats that. Cats like their independence, so it’s important to show her that you respect that. She didn’t eat them at first but eventually it worked. Space and food motivation was key for her, I respected all of her boundaries and left her alone for the most part and I made sure that she would watch me put down treats in front of her. It took a long time, but we’re now at a year and a half post-adoption and she is the neediest, most affectionate, and sweetest cat I’ve ever seen. After a few months she started roaming when we weren’t home, a bit later she was roaming when we were home. I had to do that for about a week and it was so traumatic at the time, but it was incredibly worth it in the end.Īfter about a month, she started to move to the other hidey-holes that I made for her (this was KEY, having safe, comfortable places all over my home). I called my vet and they said that if she hadn’t eaten or drank anything by the fourth day that I would have to force her to drink water and eat with a baby syringe. ![]() No eating, drinking, or using the bathroom. When I rescued my sweet girl, she hid behind our dryer without moving an inch for at least 2 straight weeks. After a day or two of confusion they started hanging out more and then following me around. There was no danger except of cuddles and treats. They needed to be shown that it was safe: blocking off some of their hidey holes showed them that the consequences of not being able to hide were…. They got into a habit of hiding and didn’t want to come out. HOWEVER if there is a point at which it becomes a bit silly, or starts to become dangerous (like if you can’t reach her if there was a fire alarm) then you should take some action. However much time you think it might take, double it. She’s probably scared and is being very cautious in a strange new environment. Long boxes also make great tunnels.Cats are creatures of habit and caution - and see you as a giant monster that smells weird, moves funny and makes strange noises. This will help prevent them from collapsing. To increase the stability, roll a cuff on each end of the paper bags before attaching them together. Why not make your own cat tunnel by using paper bags, just cut out the bottoms and tape several bags together. You can buy tunnels in many different lengths and styles, depending on your budget and the size of your room. Some tunnels have peek holes in the middle so kitty can pop out right in the middle. You can buy a fabric cat tunnel online or at your local pet product store. Try offering your cat one of the many cat tunnels out there! Give your cat lots of options like an enclosed cat bed or even letting your cat snuggle under the covers with you can work. Regardless of the reason, hiding is a part of cat life and it’s important to provide those opportunities. Some cats prefer to be tucked away while they sleep to feel safe or to keep warm. Your pet might be hiding because they’re scared or they just want to play. Cat tunnels should be on your must-have list simply because cats love to hide.
