By focusing with one eye on the dot, the rotating Haidinger’s brush will appear centered on the dot. Seeing images within your eye (entoptic phenomena), like when you see lights even when your eyes are closed. on a small turn table with approximate one rotation per second. To test for eccentric fixation, select the white or blue background with a red dot in the center of the screen and rotate the smartphone e.g. For subjects with impaired central vision, Haidinger’s brush can appear distorted or it can appear away from the object of fixation (eccentric fixation). Hence, with normal vision it appears centered on the object of fixation. Haidinger’s brush is formed only on the macula and centered on the fovea. Here the brush pattern appears as two perpendicular crossed hourglass-shaped figures, one brighter and one darker than the background. Haidinger’s brush is most easily perceived when blue polarized light is used. Entoptic phenomena are visual experiences caused by ocular structures (e.g., floaters). In white light the blue brush of the pattern (often not visible) is parallel to the oscillating electric field of the linearly polarized light entering the pupil, while the yellow brush is parallel to the oscillation of the magnetic field. Optical causes of abnormal visual perceptions include alterations in the tear film (dry eyes and abnormalities in blinking), and irregularities in the cornea (keratoconus and corneal scarring) or the lens (cataract). If the plane of polarization relative to the eye does not change, the visual phenomenon vanishes after about 2 seconds, but when the polarization of the light is rapidly switched in front of the eye, the patterns are rapidly reactivated. If, at first, one cannot see Haidinger’s brushes, one should not be discouraged, because it gets easier to see with training. An image will appear, centered on the fovea, that is centered on the fixation point. To see the Haidinger’s brush, look at a white or blue area on a smartphone screen, and slowly tilt the head, or rotate the phone. We can detect the angle of plane polarized light using an entoptic phenomenon called Haidinger’s brush. The human eye, like the eyes of many animals, is sensitive to the polarization of light. Another group of phenomena, halos, are mostly seen in pathological eyes and so have valuable clinical significance. Moving dots in vision after staring at the sky are created by your own white blood cells flowing through your eyes, the academy says. With this app one can easily use a smartphone to obtain polarized light. Turns out, the blue field entoptic phenomenon is a real and, according to the US-based American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), normal occurrence. Polarization also has profound conceptual relevance to school curricula and many beautiful polarization experiments can be performed with low cost materials. Optical polarization is found in an incredible variety of physical, chemical, biological and technological phenomena.
